Silence is golden—Or Not. Part ONE

World News Wednesdays are hard to write sometimes (admittedly, these posts have been less frequent as of late). Not because there’s nothing to write about, but because there is so much to write about. It’s hard to choose what’s most interesting or important in world news because so much of it is interesting and important.

So sometimes I mix two ideas together. Which is what I’m going to do today.

This Does Not Make Sense

Last week there was a video floating around the internet that was made by an abortion counselor who filmed herself experiencing an abortion at three weeks. The video is not graphic on screen, but I couldn’t make it through the whole thing.  I did, however, catch the part at the end where she says “I feel in awe of the fact that I can make a baby. I can make a life.”

So explain this to me. Here’s a person who has not bought into the lie that life begins at birth and until then your baby is simply a “fetus.” No, apparently she fully believes that life begins at conception; she states that what she has made is indeed life. And then she takes it. Just like that. And the viewing audience is led to believe that she slept very soundly that night.

I’m not sure if one can be more confused. Imagine someone pointing a gun at someone and saying, “Yes, I know you’re a living person. And yes, I have the right to kill you in cold blood and not face any consequences. It’s okay that you die just simply because I don’t want you to live. I won’t go to prison. I won’t even have to pay your family any money.” If we saw this actually happen in real life, we would think that person is either 1) evil itself or 2) severely mentally compromised and should never be within reach of any sharp or explosive objects.

Seriously. It just doesn’t make sense.

Silence is Not Always Golden

I’ve written about this before, so you shouldn’t be surprised about my thoughts on the issue. Abortion is not okay, and I’m completely okay saying this on the world wide web.

That’s not the only thing that is happening in our culture right now that isn’t okay. I could write a list, but it would be long and boring. But here’s the thing. As Christians, we are called to be lights in the dark universe, and to pushback on the things that aren’t okay. And by called, I mean commanded. Expected. It’s not a suggestion.

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

Philippians 2:14-16

Do you see what Philippians 2 is saying? It says you get to have a voice in the darkness. You get to have an opinion, even if that opinion isn’t popular because it’s based on God’s Word.

Bonhoeffer said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil.”

It’s time to speak up.

More on speaking up in Part II.
