Pulling Back the Shades

I don’t really know how to start this post, because I’ve never really talked about this before.

Well, that’s not completely true. I did write about a similar topic earlier this year.But this will go even deeper. 

First, I want to pose this question: “Can you be spiritual and sexual?”
At first blush (and I definitely mean blush), I would say no.

That’s what I’ve been taught all my life. I fear the church has been losing this battle, because actually, the answer is yes.

God created us as sexual beings, and the gift of sex is hugely awesome (so I’ve heard). But the church sends mixed messages to our students, our singles, and even our married couples. It is academically confirmed (i.e. “God says marital intimacy is great!”) but when it comes to practical issues, crickets can be heard. Nobody wants to talk about it, but it needs to be talked about in the church. It’s being talked about everywhere else, so we need to start the conversation here, too.

That’s exactly what Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh have done. They’ve written a book called Pulling Back the Shades. It’s first a biblical response to erotica, and books like Fifty Shades of Grey (which I DO NOT recommend reading); but it’s even better than that. It’s written for single and married women to find freedom and joy in how God has made them—that is, both spiritual and sexual.

It’s an amazing little book that I believe and pray will ignite a holy sexual revival.
