Is The Bible A Bunch of Stories?

The first man and the first woman (and their kids who didn’t turn out so great). A guy who built a big boat with his sons. A kid who was bullied by his brothers. An expat who killed a guy and met God in a bush. A very large group of very whiney people. A queen who hid her identity. And a king who loved God but made some really bad choices.

And that’s just the first half of the Old Testament.

The Bible is filled with stories.

People have been using this idea to try and debunk the Bible, saying it’s just a bunch of bedtime tales. And you know what? They’re not entirely wrong.

The Bible is full  of stories of people being people and God being God.

They’re true stories about real people — history can prove that. Each story presents a real human being with inadequate personal, physical, and spiritual resources, and they faced situations where they felt that deficiency with an intense poignancy. (Do you know that feeling? So do I.) Sometimes, they didn’t make the right decision because of that deficiency. Sometimes (okay, a lot of times) they made the worst decision possible! But the stories in the Bible all have the same hero: Jesus.

See, each story isn’t meant to spotlight a person who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps and went on to bigger and better things. No, each story spotlights the love, the justice, the mercy, the grace, and the compassion that God has for people. For you. And for me.

And when you string all those Bible stories together in a mosaic-type work, you get an even more beautiful story of redemption. The Gospel — the greatest story ever told.

Jesus is the greatest hero of the greatest story.

And He can be the hero of your story, too.

It’s time to start telling your story.

The Bible is filled with stories of people being people and God being God. So the next time someone says that the Bible is just a bunch of stories, tell them yes, it is.

And then tell them your story — of you being you and God being God.
